Hot Tip: How You Can ... Personalize Google

Ola Friend!

Okay, I'll explain the Ola bit in a minute.

But first... last week pretty much went down the toilet. A fire led to a major telecoms outage, and many of my sites were offline for much of the week.

If you've ever had your sites go down for days, you'll know the frustration it causes.

As a result, the March newsletter never left the 'printers', and has since magically transformed into this April issue.

If you were one of many trying to get through to one of my sites during the extended downtime, please try again now - and of course I apologize for all the inconvenience caused.

I've also got a substantial email backlog to go through as a result, so if you've sent me something to which I haven't yet responded, please simply send it to me again, and I'll endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks ;)

Ola, Espana

For the first two weeks in March I was holidaying in sunny Spain - well, very cold Spain for the first couple of days, but then it warmed up nicely.

A local Internet cafe helped me keep track of emails, though it's not fun sorting through thousands of Spam messages via webmail, which my own computer would normally keep mostly at bay (read the article on how you too can stop spam) - so if you sent me anything which I never responded to, please try again now, I'm sure I inadvertently missed the odd message.

My kids had a great time too - here's a quick pic of Ben and Sumiah swinging in the sun in their PJs. Yes, they may look cute in the photograph - but, believe me, both have lung power that can cause serious hearing difficulties if you get too close.

Oh, I'll just throw this one in too - have you ever seen a kid covered in quite so much chocolate cake?

RSS

Remember I mentioned RSS in my last newsletter as a possible solution to email marketing woes?

Stay tuned - RSS is gaining ground mainstream, and long term I believe it will prove to be even more effective than email marketing. It's not the same as email marketing, but it does offer many major advantages.

Confused? Don't be, it's Really Simple, Stupid. I'm putting together a full report on how you can use RSS for your web site and your business, that will put you at the cutting edge of this new technology.

Look back a few years at the pioneers of email marketing. This will effectively be your chance to be a pioneer of the new wave - RSS.

A sample from the postbag this month (used with permission of the sender):

"Just a note to let you know that I appreciate your news letter. Why? Your facts are right on. My Internet Schooling taught me the things you say, so I know they are true.

"Add to that the fact that you don't go into a 10 page glamour me news letter with why I should buy your products, that leaves me more confused than when I started reading...

"Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for your news letter without being too wordy.

"Warm regards,

How you can ... Personalize Google

Straight out of Google labs a couple of days ago (March 29, 2004) came Google Personalized, where you can create your 'profile' by checking boxes to select specific interests. When you search, you can use a sliding bar to instantaneously rearrange the results of a search based on how much emphasis you want your 'profile' to have on them. Google will deliver results based on the profile that you set.

This is in BETA, so you may get some problems with the functionality - but it's worth taking a look at to see what the future shape of Google might be. Similarly, Froogle was in BETA for over a year, but is now main stream, with a link on the new-look Google search page.

No doubt too you've heard about Google email (Gmail) - before you jump on board you may like to read this.
